The product was created by Amédée Edouard Dor (A.E. Dor) in 1858. He came from a cognac family, but wanted to establish a cognac house and work with cognac full time. His focus was old quality cognacs, and he used many of the first years to travel round and buy old cognacs. Many of those which he bought had been aged more than 70 years.
A.E. Dor are some of the best old cognacs of the period. Like other cognac houses, the eldest are in "le paradis", the name which is used for the part of the company which contains the eldest cognacs. Some of these have lain so long that they have reduced the alcohol to 30%. This reduction of alcohol is a process called "angel's share" (see article on cognac). Some of these are sold as they are, in that they are not used as bleding. Cognacs follow the BNIC rules in that they are not under 40% (rules from 1946), but A. E. Dor was the first cognac house (1951) which was allowed to sell cognac with a lower alcohol percentage. This is called the "Très Vieilles Grandes Champagnes".
The house produces some of the best-selling quality cognac, and they have some of the oldest cognac and do not use artificial additives
